PUG//14/ Joyce Tenneson Light Warriors at Fotografiska

Our next endeavour at Fotografiska in Stockholm is an exhibition with the american artist Joyce Tenneson. Her luminous and unique 20×24 inch Polaroids emanate a poignant mystical sensibility. Her latest work evolves from sensual and mythical beauty of the nude bringing forth mystical beauty of the trees. Her first show in Sweden, entitled Light Warriors opens at Fotografiska 18th of September 2014.

‘I want to allow others to reveal and celebrate aspects of themselves that are usually hidden. My camera is a witness. It holds up a light to help my subjects recognise their essence, and gives them the courage to collaborate in recording these revelations.’

Joyce Tenneson is born in Weston, USA in 1945 on the grounds of a convent. This world full of spiritual rituals and cycles has significantly impacted her work. As an artist, spirituality and sensuality early became completely interwoven in her psyche and in her images. The premise of the exhibition Light warriors is Tenneson’s connection with spirituality and femininity, presented in these five bodies of work – Light Warriors, Transformations, Luminous Spirits, Wise Women and Trees and the Alchemy of Light.

Tenneson’s portraits of women often go beyond age and the conventional sense of beauty, revealing the many human complexities. As if drawn into her subject’s inner power and radiance, her images are revealing their enigmatic, timeless and moving souls. Tenneson’s portraits of women over the age of 60 in Wise Women remind us that we may all one day blossom into our 60’s, 70’s and beyond.

Tenneson’s latest work Trees and the Alchemy of Light represents an evolution of her artistic vision. In portraying trees, she reveals their strength and their complexity as well as the human understanding that all forms of life are connected. The photographs from the series are presented as a video installation in collaboration with composer Erlend Sæverud, creating a serene atmosphere.

Over the past 40 years Tenneson’s work has been exhibited in numerous places all over the world, she has published 16 comprehensive monographs and she has received a lot of recognition for her work such as The Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Photographers of America. Readers of American Photo Magazine recently voted Tenneson among the ten most influential women in the history of photography.
