//To me, every creature, human or nonhuman, has an equal right to live. This feeling, this belief affects me every time I frame an animal in my camera. The photograph are my elegy to these beautiful creatures, to this wrenchingly beautiful world that is steadily, tragically vanishing before our eyes.//

Nick Brandt [1966] was born and raised in London, England where he studied Painting and Film. He moved to the United States in 1992 and directed several award-winning music videos. While directing “Earth Song” for Michael Jackson in Tanzania, Brandt fell in love with the animals and land of East Africa. In 2000, Brandt embarked upon his ambitious photographic project: a trilogy of books to memorialise the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa.

His work is a combination of epic panoramas of animals within dramatic landscapes and graphic portraits more akin to studio portraiture of human subjects from the early 20th Century, as if these animals were already long dead.

The titles of the trilogy of books form one consecutive sentence: On This Earth, A Shadow Falls – Across the ravaged Land. In the final book in the trilogy, Nick Brandt show darker vision amidst the beauty, a further diminishing of the natural world he loves and photographs.

Since 2004, Brandt has had multiple solo exhibitions worldwide, and his first solo museum exhibition was held at Fotografiska in Stockholm, Sweden in 2011, with 140,000 visitors. This exhibition was also shown at Preus Museum in Horten the summer of 2013.

Brandt shoots on film, and his limited edition prints are of two kinds – archival pigment prints, and large platinum/palladium prints using giant digitally manufactured contact negatives.
